Bing: a robot

Latest Update:
December 17, 2000

Note:  Bing was originally targeted at the April 2001 Fire Fighting Robot Contest; however, in January 2001, I decided that it could not be ready and took a break from working on Bing to work on some other projects.  I'll make more updates when I get back to working on Bing -- which will happen eventually since it stares at me forlornly and I feel guilty about that.

This page chronicles the development of a small robot named Bing, designed and built for fun as a hobby.  Bing's purpose is to compete in Trinity College's Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest.  Bing was the first robot I worked on, so his purpose was also to introduce me to robot construction.

I started Bing late in August of 2000.  Although I have a background in computer science, I had never built a robot before, so the entire process has been a learning experience.

I decided that Bing should walk (it will be a biped), since that was more interesting to me than building a wheeled robot.  I hope that I can finish Bing in time to have a decent showing in the contest.

If there's any info I haven't included here that you'd like to read about, send me an email and I'll try to get it into the next update.

Building Bits of Bing -- The Upper Leg
A little pictorial essay showing the construction of Bing's upper leg.  Warning: the page has a bunch of pictures on it, so it might take a while to download.

The State of the Bing

Here is a picture of Bing in its current state.

Bing is almost hip high, a hair over six inches tall so far.  The wiring is kind of a wild mess (and there are still six more wires to each foot still to attach), but I don't want to make them neater until it is clear exactly where each wire needs to go.

Some little bits that will form Bing's hip joint.  Not too exciting a picture but that's all there is to show for this week!
